The Basilica of Santa María
The Basilica of Santa Maria is the oldest religious building in Alicante and dates back to the 14th century. This architectural gem was built in the Valencian Gothic style on the remains of a mosque.
After a fire in the fifteenth century, the Basilica of Santa Maria had to be rebuilt. The façade is Baroque and is crowned by two asymmetrical towers built in the fourteenth and eighteenth centuries. Above the doorway is a statue of the Virgin Mary by the famous Spanish sculptor Juan Bautista Borja. Inside the basilica there is a high altar from the Rococo period of the eighteenth century and you will also find an original baroque organ from Valencia from 1653.
