San Nicolas Cathedral
San Nicolas Cathedral in Spain
Construction began on the Cathedral of San Nicolás in 1600, replacing the building that stood before. It is built in the Herrerian Renaissance style and is located in the heart of the city. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross with an interior that boasts remarkable features such as a 15th century cloister with two baroque doors, an altar and a blue dome 45 metres high. Below the dome is the Capilla de la Comunión, considered one of the finest examples of Spanish Baroque architecture. The interior was recently restored to celebrate the exhibition La Luz de las Imágenes (The Light of the Images) in Alicante, which aims to restore and promote it.
